PARENT LOSS

WE’RE SUPPOSED TO

OUTLIVE OUR PARENTS

Doesn’t always mean
we’re ready when the time comes..

DOH.

IN THE RIGHT PLACE?

I dunno. Every experience any of the following?

REACHING TO CALL MOM, WHO DIED YEARS AGO

It’s been almost 20 years. And yet there can still be things I want to tell her first.

NOW YOU GET IT, NOW THAT
THEY’RE GONE

The more I understand them, the more my parents amaze me. And I can’t tell them.

HEARING A SONG AND INSTANTLY FEELING CONNECTED

“Both Sides Now,” the Judy Collins version. Takes me back to my mama every time.

HEARING A PARENT’S WORDS COMING OUT OF YOUR MOUTH

Sometimes comforting, sometimes horrifying. Realizing you’re like them.

EATING SOMETHING MOM MADE

Tamale pie. Profiteroles. Stuffed cabbage. Homemade pasta. Coquilles sans jacques. Mama could cook.

FEELING A HURT YOU COULDN’T BEFORE

Wait. You did what? And that made sense how? And then we all just pretended it didn’t happen?

NO LONGER SEEKING APPROVAL

When I see someone who doesn’t give a f*ck, I wonder if a critical parent is no longer in their life.

NOT SURE WHEN, IF YOU CAN FORGIVE

Time has a way of softening many things. But some hurts are deep enough to make true healing feel very far off.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Pull up a chair.
